Tonight for the first time since I was about 14 or so, I called a radio station and requested a song, Oldies 103.3 in Boston. The DJ was Mike Henigan (I believe that's what he said) and we started talking about Barry as I requested a song to be played dedicated to Barry and the people who loved him. The DJ knew what happened. He spoke of Fats and others and said when Barry's name never surfaced everyone was worried. (everyone meaning people in the radio field) He also said how sad he was at hearing the news about Barry and what a great loss it is.
I told him about the website and the memorial book and he said he thought Barry Scott might have something on his show during the weekend. He played Cowsills music the night before and said he was going to play Hair.
We hung up and before I knew it I heard me on the radio! I didn't think I was being recorded. He played Hair and of course I blasted it. My twins said 'tell me who sings which part' and I said 'of course I know that!'
After the song was over he mentioned the loss again, the website (saying cowSILL.com not cowsills which I told him) and the memorial book. He also said something about Barry again, him being a member of the Cowsills and that he died way too young before his 51st birthday and closed with saying things about the Cowsills, the last one being "they are one of the greats". Notice "are" not "were".
He is SO right!
Hearing their music on the radio made me feel a little better and hopefully we will all get to a point where we think of Barry and have wonderful, happy memories and not just the tragic ending of his life.
