you say noone was there to drive the buses? well id say they should have had volunteers i live in a town where large %%people voulteer for all sorts of stuff, picking up trash on the bike trail the park, tutoring, cleaning up disabled apratments anything you can think of id think at least half of the drivers would have been there in new orleans to help and to get out themselves not a very prepared city and i guess bush and clinton both cut back funds for diike 60 minutes said murtha is anti war but hilery and kerrey arent saying much about war i hope people organize for a third party maybe i like the libertarians sort of because theyd say let locals handle their own affairs and tax less but i like welfare programs for the poor otherwise id vote for liberatirians ron paul is an ex lib turned repub and hes ok maybe Harmony, please go back and read my prior statement! As for buses, they were either price gouging or the roads were closed due to bottlenecking. Did you SEE the media coverage on people trying to evacuate? It was a race to leave the city and the freeways and highways were jammed. As for a prepared city, once again, read my above statement.... Bush and his group of not a very nice persons cut 71.2 million dollars to Lousiannia for federal emergency relief funds...i.e. emergency preparedness training, emergency crews, d**e repair, etc. That not a very nice person knew in the last few years that if those d**es broke that it would be the 3rd largest disaster to EVER hit this nation bar none, including 9/11. Do you know about the looters and snipers who keeping people from fleeing the city? The local thugs and creeps who burned down malls and vehicles and stole guns and shot at the people trying to leave and those trying to get help in to the sick and stranded? Volunteers who pick up bike trails and such, nice...but let's see if those same people you're talking about would be willing to dodge bullets, pull dead babiesand partial bodies out of the mud and muck, to hold a 80 year old woman while she cries that her home is totally destroyed and her husband dead...that's the question: would they do it? I'm sorry but I get tired of people pointing the finger at the people of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans while the blame belongs on the mentally retarded, self serving, greedy Bush administration and the neocon conservatives who beleive, "if it's not in my back yard, it doesn't concern me"... These are the people who dropped the ball...not the people of Lousianna, Mississippi, Alabama or any other state who suffered and FEMA passed them by like so much garbage. Remember, we lost Barry too, cos of Katrina....is someone gonna blame him for "not being prepared" ?

I'm sorry but I get tired of people pointing the finger at the people of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans while the blame belongs on the mentally retarded, self serving, greedy Bush administration ... How Bush Blew It (link) The reality, say several aides who did not wish to be quoted because it might displease the president, did not really sink in until Thursday night. Some White House staffers were watching the evening news and thought the president needed to see the horrific reports coming out of New Orleans. Counselor Bartlett made up a DVD of the newscasts so Bush could see them in their entirety as he flew down to the Gulf Coast the next morning on Air Force One.
How this could be—how the president of the United States could have even less "situational awareness," as they say in the military, than the average American about the worst natural disaster in a century—is one of the more perplexing and troubling chapters in a story that, despite moments of heroism and acts of great generosity, ranks as a national disgrace.

www.uccs.edu/~geogenvs/ges199/rainier/evac.htm Evacuation In the town of Orting, all three schools are located on the same campus; therefore, they only have to plan one evacuation route for all the students. The evacuation plan works like this: * K-6 students- all students load onto 2 or 3 school buses * 7-12 students - students are taken to a "Link-Up Zone" where they are loaded into cars with faculty or students who have cars. They have organized it so that each driver stands by his/her car and holds up the number of fingers of available seatbelts. This way there is enough transportation for all students (Fielding, 11/97). This evacuation plan has been practiced many times, and so far the record for getting all school children into vehicles and ready to depart is 10 minutes - before they begin the 4 mile drive to the safety zone. In addition, school officials are working on obtaining funding to build a footbridge across the Carbon River. The bridge would give students immediate access to higher ground without having to load into cars and buses. This would get students out of the danger zone even faster (Smith 5/98). Fielding feels confident that the students will be able to get to safety in any situation. He also feels good about the possibility of all citizens reaching a safe zone in the event of a eruption, but it's the unannounced lahars not associated with an eruption that worry him. That's what's been troubling us all along; his lack of concern and being on the spot; afterall, that's part of his job as "commander/chimp in chief". And I'm sure his advisors were disgusted along with the rest of the nation when he flew over New Orleans with his dog. ( I have a feeling the dog was even embarassed by him.) Then he lands at the White House in Air Force One to report the devastation .....wonder if he used his xray vision to summarize the damage since he never landed?
