So sorry for the loss of dear Nikki Dog. May she forever romp in sunshine and may your memories of her warm your heart as you mourn her. The Rainbow Bridge

Kate,
What a terrible shock. Caren is an expert at this kind of passing and I know she is absolutely right that these well loved and loving pets make a very special crossing supported and gladened by your love for them. We appreciate their unconditional love so much, it's easy to forget that our very special relationships fill them with joy, too.

Your kind expressions of sympathy really do bring comfort. Nikki was only 8 and has always been completely healthy. This has just blown us away--so unexpected. I'm trying to get my girls through this. It's another of life's unpleasant lessons, I suppose.

Kate, I know how you feel. When my previous cat died unexpectedly at age 11, I was a mess! I live alone and the house seemed SOO empty. People were advising me to wait before getting another cat, but my heart told me no. Three weeks later, I adopted Dash, my present kitty, who is a happy, healthy boy of almost 6 yrs old. He's a Sealpoint Himalayan mix, and needless to say, he's VERY, VERY special to me We are all willing to listen anytime you need to talk about Nikki, so feel free to post. Lauren

I only lasted a week, after losing my 16 year old cat Belle (a very long story which I will spare all at the moment), I went right to PetSmart and there was Tigger and the rest is history, or at least she and I like to think of it that way. ;D

I lost my 14 year old Shepard last spring and it was one of the worst things I've ever gone through. It took us 6 months, but we are now enjoying Doger's company

This is so awful...I put my 13 year old malamute down last summer and I thought it was the worst thing ever, but I realize now that I had ample time to say good-bye. I didn't get to tell her I loved her or what a good dog she was. She was a stray I took in out of the freezing rain in November '97. I thought I had 5 or 6 more years with her. I was up until 3 a.m. again sobbing last night, because the house is still full of tufts of dog hair (which I was complaining about 3 days ago)...then I saw one big muddy footprint on the carpet (again, I had cursed it on Friday). I know this pales in comparison to the Cowsill's loss so I don't want to overstate my grief. But she was such a funny, sweet beast with a good soul. My only comfort is knowing that regardless of what happened to her in her first nine months of life, for the rest of her life she was treated so kindly and was so loved. I know she was lucky to find this family, and we were blessed to have her in our home.

You are so right,my dog was a stray when I got him 13 years ago, and I have given Bobby love, warmth, and security for his entire life. What a great life he has had and will cointinue to have, until his time is up.Nothing compares with the Cowsills loss, but everyone grieves for all their losses, in their own special way fror as long as it takes. Last night Bob was playing with his son Ryan on keyboards and I know that keeps Bob strong, being with his family and playing his music. He played songs I had neve heard him play at the pub, songs we know likwe Poor Baby and Deliever Me, something tells me he is practicing for the party. Whatever it is it was wonderful to hear him sing the songs.
